Take a ride only 20 miles from the busy coast of Maine,
through the open farmland of Waldo County and you will find spectacular views of the western mountains, people working their fields with horses and oxen, farms producing sweet berries and crisp apples in their seasons, restaurants with home-cooked meals, people pedalling the train tracks on rail cycles, the local Amish residents traveling in buggies and on bicycles, all quietly
creating a strong community centered around Knox, Thorndike and Unity.
GARDEN VARIETY is a unique experience of a shop.
You'll find practical and peculiar antiques, home goods, fabrics, books, baskets, letterpress work and art
as well as freshly-baked organic cookies, biscotti, carrot cake .
There's fresh-ground organic coffee, assorted teas and a sunny deck.
We specialize in the graphic arts and do custom letterpress printing
in our own print shop in Knox. We take special pleasure in showing how to create comfortable and artistic surroundings using ordinary things.  You'll find old wooden crates, foundry dies, parts of furniture from grander eras, plaster castings, rusty tools and useful implements.  We seek out old signs and commercial graphics.  Let us know what you like and we will scout out local treasures for you.  For our mutual good health, we seek to maintain a fragrance-free environment, having no scented candles or artificially-scented potpourri on the premises. We sell no artificially-fragranced items.  Check www.thinkbeforeyoustink.com for more info on this healthy decision.
